The concept of access implies that anyone who is eligible to apply to be a student at Haley College should face no barriers to acceptance in comparison with other eligible applicants. Equity implies that all eligible applicants receive an equitable and appropriate outcome. Equity also implies that if any sector of the population is not receiving a fair proportion of resources (under representation), it is not being equitably treated and requires specific targeting. Access and equity also means the absence of harassment at Haley College. Unlawful harassment can be based on any of the prohibited grounds of discrimination. Harassment is any form of behaviour that is unwelcome, which is based on one of the prohibited grounds, and which offends, humiliates or intimidates someone.
Purpose / Preamble
Haley College is committed to providing equality of opportunity to all students and applicants for all courses. Access to training opportunities will not be affected by gender, sexual preference, marital status, disability, religion, culture, racial origins, political preference, pregnancy or age.
Procedure
The responsibility for ensuring access and equity lies with every staff member who has direct or indirect involvement with students, and management of Haley College is committed to achieving the following Access and Equity objectives and strategies:
- To ensure the broadest possible field of applicants for student places is reached by targeted advertising and stressing that course are available to all suitably qualified applicants.
- To ensure that student selection procedures are non-discriminatory.
- Selecting students on the basis of merit, ie skills, ability and experience.
- To regularly review all Haley College student policies, literature, publicity and training material to ensure it is non discriminatory.
- To look for opportunities to encourage all kinds of people to enter into study at Haley College.
- To ensure all course are accessible for applicants with physical disabilities.
- To continue to explore options for distance learning.
- All Managers/Staff members are responsible for ensuring all decisions made during their work are not based upon any of the defined discrimination criteria.
- Early and timely corrective action will be taken to deal with any discriminatory behaviour. Concerns will be handled promptly and professionally.
- Staff members have the responsibility to treat others with fairness, equity and respect.
- This service supports a total working and learning environment free from discriminatory practices and activities.
- Any incidents reported which relate to discrimination of a person will be dealt with promptly
- All employment decisions including, training and promotion made by management shall be solely based on the merit of the individual.
- All student intake decisions, including recruitment, assessment and training, made by staff/Management will be solely based on the merit of the individual and set admission criteria and/or course assessment requirements.
- All allegations of harassment and/or unfair treatment shall be recorded with actions taken to resolve the issues, and satisfaction of outcome shall be followed up with the appellant in writing by the C.E.O. Satisfaction with outcome will be sought.
- These issues will be filed and stored for thirty years.
